Marine Engineering Officer

I've been interested in airbrushing miniatures for awhile now.  Looking at the beautiful work Angel Giraldez puts out, I preordered his soon to be released book on his techniques.  He's pioneering a lot of new ground with his methods.

Angel's style is basically using the airbrush for all basecoating, shading, and 80% of the highlighting.  He does only an edge highlight or two to bring some more definition to the detail.  He also uses pinpoint washes to add shading.  I've never been able to figure out how to use washes other than the "slop it on the whole area" approach, so I hope he goes into more detail in his book on that subject.

With that in mind I also purchased a new Badger Sotar 20/20 specifically to paint miniatures with.  My Iwata just doesn't have the fine detail that this brush can achieve.  It came highly recommended, and I see why now - it is phenomenal.  Trigger is smooth, it is easier to clean than my Iwata, and

After devouring various youtube videos, the Tom Schadle Icestorm tutorials, and anywhere Angel has posted tutorials, I set out to learn how to airbrush miniatures.

Here is my first attempt, a civilian model for Infinity the Game, the Marine Engineering Officer.

The blacklines are less rough in real life, I promise.  Overall it is about 80% airbrushed, all blacks and whites were done with it.  Blues, skin and hair were brush painted.  I also want to add a double yellow line on the base, as she is meant to be on asphalt and the base needs some more decoration.

Skin is Cork Brown, Flat Earth wash, Cork > Medium > Sunny Skintone

Things learned: Liquid mask is best applied thickly so it is able to be removed easily.  Silly putty can also be used for masking - note to self to pick some up.

Black is very easy to over highlight, shadows and midtones of black is black.  Only the highlights are brighter than the black.

Applying pinwashes is easier over a gloss coat.

I've decided to airbrush all of my new Gremlins for ToMB as well!  Here goes nothing...

Infinity Nomads

Still posting pics from the camera downtime.

I need to blackline a few of these models, but the main colors are done.  Have to wait for a sans-coffee day.

11/11/14 - Tuesday Infinity Night at Battleground Games

Been running some demos lately on Tuesdays for Infinity.  Tonight was the last mission of Icestorm, so we moved up to a full size table.

Operation Icestorm

Finally!  Corvus Belli has finally delivered copies of Operation Icestorm to the US!  A few days later, and a nice shiny package from The War Store arrived at my place.

It is awesome.  Go buy it.  Now.

Infinity Terrain Update Pt 4

Finito! Mat is in, very impressed with the quality.  Map is VERY yellow toned.. Not sure I like it, but it will do for now.  There is probably a touch too much terrain on the table, but I'd rather have more and be able to take off, than have not enough and have to paint more.

I cut the edges off the mat since the picture, the printed area is exactly 4x4.

A keen eye will notice the Ikubes have been replaced with ReallyUsefulboxes .14 liter size, minus the lids and handles..  More durable than paper, and HEXES!!  Sprayed on some stencils cut from index cards with white paint.  Needed a lot of varnish to keep the paint on these.

Also made a bunch of crates out of shapes punched out of index cards.  Some squares, circles, etc.  Glued them to wooden blocks, and I had a table and more's worth of crates for ~$30, punches included.

Glad to see this project finished off.  Very glad.

Also painted up a Nurse, the second Rifleman, a Moran Maasai, and the Intruder HMG.

My local club is starting its annual BB league, so I picked up some Black Scorpion Minis Humans to represent my perennial Fantasy team, the Big Yellow Zonkers.  I take delivery on Monday, and should have them painted for their first game on Thursday.  Here goes nothing...

Infinity Terrain Update pt. 3

Hey everyone! Finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel on this one.

Buildings are done.

Barrels, Crates, Shipping Containers are done.
OK, I have ~4 more shipping containers and about 40 crates left, but the table doesn't really need it.

Antennae are done.

Consoles are done.

Benches are done.

Just waiting for my mat to come in from Banners on the Cheap.  It's made from Topo's road textures, chained together, rotated, and scaled down to a 4" road.

Woohoo!!!

Infinity Terrain Update Pt 2

Hey everyone,

Infinity Terrain Update Part 2.  Still chompin away at it.  Apologies for the crappy pics, my camera is down and I need to send it to Canon for repair.  (#^&*%Q^78$#^&*!!)

Got another 3 buildings painted.  Changed up how I paint the grey, so I'll have to repaint one the red building.

I also folded up about 20 Ikubes for cover in between the buildings.  Right now I prooooobably have a bit too much terrain on the board, but I'd rather have extra and take away than have to build more after the fact.

Back in Black

After seeing some of the fantastic Tom Schadle's Nomads, I decided to rework the black areas on my finished Nomads.  I was never particularly happy with them, so here's how I want them to look.

Tom's Tunguska Hacker

Tom's Tunguska Hacker closeup
His recipe is:

"The black is based Black, then Highlighted with a mix of Black and VMC 166 Dark Grey, Dark Grey, 162 Basalt Grey <> 005 Ivory."

Luckily, I only have two models done!!

Infinity Terrain Update

Finally assembled most of my Shark Mounted Lasers stuff.  Have another 8 bridges left to assemble.

Next project is to get my hands on some more scatter terrain for both the roofs and ground level.  I'm thinking some Warsenal planters, some line of sight walls from somewhere (Underground Lasers?)  Think I need a few shipping containers too for small coverage.

In the meantime, I made some barrels a few months ago out of some wooden 1"x3/4" thread bobbins.  I picked them up on ebay from the seller "barnettandco" for ~$10 for 50.  I'm sure these can be locally sourced too.

With a 1/2" hole punch (Amazon) I punched out circles from index cards to cover the holes on the top and bottom.  I painted them in some bright colors, and then applied a mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black oil paints, only slightly thinned for weathering.  I then wiped most of the oils off with a paper towel.  This left them kind of grimy.

I glued them together in some interesting groups, and here's the result.

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.
